Product Spotlight: Peter Valcarcel Collection for Homdiy
By Diana Mosher
Rugs, wallpaper, ceramics, accessories, accent pieces and lighting… New York City-based artist and designer Peter Valcarcel is a prolific producer of all things beautiful and useful. He also creates abstract artworks inspired by the simplicity of natural forms and the inherent modernist and geometric patterns they suggest.
Valcarcel’s signature style pairs monochromatic and neutral tones with classic modernist abstract shapes and patterns. His mantra is that for an object to take up home space, it should also be useful by enhancing function, form or feeling.
Now, Valcarcel has partnered with Homdiy, a Canadian online purveyor of chic lighting and hardware. The capsule collection of Peter’s Favorite Things promotes specific items he strongly recommends—including his latest lighting.
“I have always been interested in lighting and what it does to a room,” says Valcarcel. “Most people think lighting is only important at night or when needed; I think lighting or a lamp is important at any time.” He adds, “it is an accessory that you see in the room at all times, and it is important that it brings something to the room, something more than just light.”
Growing up in Peru, Peter was exposed to the striking designs and natural motifs of Incan art. Like the designers in that ancient civilization, Peter too favors natural and sustainable materials that last.
“I am mostly inspired by shapes and nature and Homdiy understands that. As a designer is it very important to collaborate with companies that understand and can see not only where you are coming from, but also where you want to go creatively, I feel I get that from Homdiy.”
With the pandemic forcing us to spend much more time at home, Peter thinks we may have become more acutely aware of the importance of interior design, our at-home environment and its impact on our moods and mental and emotional wellbeing. But he has been attuned to that his whole professional life, working in art direction, visual merchandising and interior design for the past 20 years.
