5 Outdoor Design Trends Multifamily—and Workplace—Can’t Ignore
By Diana Mosher

People are drawn to the outdoors because it satisfies a deep biological and psychological need to connect with nature. In design and wellness circles, this is often discussed through the lens of Biophilia—the innate human tendency to seek connections with nature and natural systems. When workplaces, homes or hospitality environments create meaningful outdoor spaces, the benefits go far beyond aesthetics.
Whether we are working or relaxing, great outdoor design supports five dimensions of wellness: Mental wellness – calming natural surroundings; Physical wellness – fresh air and sunlight; Social wellness – relaxed gathering spaces; Emotional wellness – restorative environments; Productivity wellness – better focus and energy.
As the lines between indoor and outdoor living continue to blur, one thing is clear: outdoor spaces are no longer amenities—they are essential experiences. Here are five outdoor design trends shaping the future of multifamily living and the workplace experience:
1. Outdoor Living Rooms (Not Just Seating Areas) Today’s residents and office workers want spaces that feel curated and comfortable—not temporary. Think layered furniture groupings, performance fabrics, outdoor rugs and coffee tables that mirror interior living rooms. Design tip: Create zones—conversation, dining and quiet retreat—to increase usability throughout the day.
2. Wellness-Centered Design Outdoor spaces are becoming sanctuaries for mental and physical well-being. Apartment developers are incorporating yoga decks, meditation gardens, cold plunge features, and walking paths. Even small courtyards can integrate biophilic elements—lush planting, natural materials, and water features—to reduce stress and elevate the resident experience.
3. All-Season Functionality The most valuable outdoor spaces don’t sit empty for half the year. Heated seating areas, fire pits, pergolas, wind screens and integrated lighting extend usability across seasons. Smart design = higher ROI.
4. Work-From-Anywhere Ready Remote and hybrid work have transformed expectations. Outdoor coworking zones with Wi-Fi, power access, shaded seating and acoustic separation are in high demand. Rooftops are evolving into open-air offices—blending productivity with fresh air and natural light.
5. Experience-Driven AmenitiesThe shift is from passive to active engagement. Residents and office workers are drawn to spaces that create moments: outdoor kitchens, movie walls, communal dining tables and event-ready layouts. These environments foster community—and community drives retention.
Why This Matters
In a competitive leasing environment, outdoor design is no longer an afterthought—it’s a differentiator. Thoughtfully designed exterior spaces not only photograph beautifully for marketing, but also create emotional connections that turn renters into long-term residents and also helps retain workplace talent.
So, the question is no longer if you invest in outdoor spaces—it’s how strategically you design them. Warmer weather is on the way!
