Case Study: A New Space for a Brooklyn Family

When a Brooklyn family of five moved from a lovely but cramped co-op apartment to a three-story townhouse nearby, they were excited about the possibilities.
They had worked with a designer to stage their apartment for sale. They were happy with those results which helped the sale move forward quickly, but they wanted to style their new home in their own way and without designer input. However, once they moved into the new house, their DIY project became overwhelming. They decided to call in Diana Mosher Associates for a series of interior design consultations. We helped with space planning, sourcing of new products and feedback on their extensive art collection.
Our client said, “When we moved into our new house, Diana’s advice on furniture placement, new furnishings, room color and organization gave us confidence and definitely improved our shared spaces. Her suggestions helped make our home a place where it’s easy to entertain friends and family.”
We also connected the client with local resources to design and build custom bookcases in the parlor. Our CAD drawings helped kick off that conversation.
This creative family is heavily involved in the arts: music making, classical singing and dance to name a few of the activities that happen on a regular basis and also when guests visit. These lifestyle realities impacted our space planning options. In the living room, the only long wall that would accommodate a full-sized sofa needed to be reserved for the piano. Jam sessions are a regular part of life for the family, and these need to happen in the living room—not downstairs in the spacious media room.
Likewise, in the adjacent parlor, the family needed to be able to quickly and easily clear furniture and floor coverings out of the way for an impromptu dance practice in the heart of the home.
Moving to a new home is a huge project. Diana Mosher Associates can help with design consultations for a range of decorating projects from hanging art to selecting a paint palette. Full-service interior design is also available for kitchen and bath remodels and more.
